As a Down-Trained Instructor, you’ll be the first touchpoint for new riders, guiding them through CBT’s and road rides. The bikes range from mopeds to and 125cc.

You’re responsible for instilling the fundamentals and building the foundations. A task that requires patience, skill and the ability to shape novice riders by reducing risk.

Qualification time varies, with an average of 500 hours of education.

This encompasses observing practical training, home study, following and watching on-road practical training.

Proving your capability is your key to success.

You’ll need to demonstrate comprehensive training delivery across all lessons. Gaining the trust of your CBT mentor and/or ATB owner is necessary before you can instruct students on your own.

It is not a short process and you’ll need to invest time and home study into achieving the desired level of competence.

The cost of becoming qualified varies, with professional training offering the most structured and time-efficient path to becoming a Down-Trained Instructor.

You will need to invest your time and effort, along with some outlay on Lesson Plans and Training Diagrams. This will save you many hours of research and collating training information.

You must have held a full motorcycle licence for at least 3 years, you should also be competent at riding and be able to ride to a high standard.

You will need an in-date photo-card licence or equivalent, a road-legal motorcycle and appropriate insurance if you will be using your own motorcycle.

You must also conform to the DVSA criteria and fit their profile as a fit and proper person to be registered as a Motorcycle Instructor.

The CBT Syllabus is intensive, you must fully understand each section and lesson within each Element.

Upon qualification, you’ll earn the CBT1. This enables you to teach automatic and geared bikes up to 125cc to learners aged 16 and above.

This includes conducting CBT courses and on-road training up to the 125cc threshold, a crucial step before riders advance to their full licence.

Starting the Journey to Teach Learner Riders

To begin teaching, your ATB will apply for a Down-Trained certificate on your behalf from the DVSA. Armed with your certificate and the necessary insurances, you’re set to start training.

Be prepared for a DVSA Standards Check within the first three months to confirm your training standards. Having robust Lesson Plans and a set of Training Diagrams will ensure you’re successful.
